Web Navigation Dos and Donts.
by Robert Carter
- Your home page should distribute the traffic smoothly and efficienly throughout your web site.
- Use navigation bars to direct visitors to main sections of your web site.
- The menu should load fast and the menu should drop down without any delays (Menu Maker generates very fast code)
- "3 clicks rule" - the deepest page should be available in 3 clicks from the home page, review your site map if necessary
- Don't unlink top items - some users disable javascript and they can't see any dropdowns
- Do not put too many items under top items - 20 is a reasonable limit
- Use text for top items and submenus, do not use text images instead
- Place the main navigation bar above the center of the screen or to the left of the center
- Create consistent look and feel (use Menu Maker's SCRIPT SRC tag to populate the menu code) and place the menu on every page of your web site
